Crash kills Medford man on Highland Rd.

A Somerville man is being charged with motor vehicle homicide after leading State Police on a chase from Everett into Somerville that ended with him allegedly crashing into a taxicab and killing a Medord man.

Javier Morales, 29, of Somerville, was charged with motor vehicle homicide after  he crashed into a taxi cab in Somerville early this morning, killing Paul Farris, prosecutors said. Morales will be arraigned on Tuesday.

“This driver’s recklessness led to the tragic death of the young victim, Paul Farris,” District Attorney Gerard T. Leone said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and friends, and we continue to investigate the circumstances of this crash.”

According to authorities, at approximately 1:20 a.m. today, Morales was driving a Mercury Mountaineer SUV in Everett and ordered to pull over by Massachusetts State Police for motor vehicle violations. Morales refused to stop and led the State Police on a chase into Somerville.

At approximately 1:24 a.m., Morales’ SUV struck a cab which was stopped on Highland Road in Somerville. Farris was found outside the cab and transported to Somerville Hospital where he was pronounced dead later this morning. The driver of the cab and an occupant in the cab were found suffering from serious injuries and transported to Massachusetts General Hospital to be treated. Morales and another passenger in his SUV were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital to be treated for their injuries.

The circumstances of the crash continue to be investigated by Massachusetts State Police and Somerville Police.
