A shooting at 1:40 a.m. this morning ended with a 26 year old Dorchester man in the hospital and a 28 year old Somerville man in cuffs.

Police received calls for shots fired on Cross Street near Alston Street at 1:40 a.m.  Upon arrival, officers found ballistic evidence at the scene, but no victim, police said.  A short time later, Somerville Police were informed that a shooting victim had arrived at a local hospital reporting that he had been shot in Somerville.  The victim, a 26 year old male from Dorchester, was shot multiple times, but is expected to survive, police said.

  As the police units were responding to the incident, Officer Kevin Shackelford, who was responding to the shots fired call as a back-up unit, allegedly saw a car crash into a parked vehicle at 26 Cross Street, about five blocks away from the reported shooting incident.  When Officer Shackelford approached the operator of the car, who was later identified as Jamon Jones, he was shoved by Jones, who then ran in the direction of Bonair Street with Shackelford in pursuit.   Officer Shackelford wrestled Jones to the ground as he attempted to scale a fence in a back yard on Bonair Street.  The struggle continued back onto Bonair Street where Jones allegedly reached into his waistband and pulled out a ‚Äúlarge dark object‚Äù which fell to the ground.  As additional officers arrived, Jones was subdued and handcuffed.  Officers then observed that the object that fell to the ground during the struggle was a loaded Glock .40 caliber pistol, police said. 

Jamon Jones, 28, is a resident of Somerville.  He has been charged with carrying a firearm without a license, carrying ammunition without a license, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, resisting arrest, failing to stop for a police officer and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

Jones is expected to be arraigned in Somerville District Court on Monday morning.
