The Somerville Rotary Club recently had the pleasure of hearing about the work Rotary is doing in Pakistan to both combat literacy and polio.  Rachel William is the local Rotary district literacy coordinator and goes to Pakistan twice a year. She brought with her two Pakistanis who she works with on these projects.  Rotary has been the leader in eradicating polio in the world with just three countries – Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria – still having cases of polio.

Rotary’s work to promote peace in the world relies on programs like improving literacy and eradicating polio to demonstrate on interconnectedness across the globe. Pictured left to right are Dr. Ali Akhtar of Pakistan, Somerville Rotary Club President Jeannie Scarpa, Rachel Williams from Ipswich, and Zoe Richards, a recent graduate of the Fletcher School at Tufts.

The Somerville Rotary Club meets at the Mt. Vernon Tuesdays at 12:15 p.m. Anyone interested in learning more about Rotary is welcome to come.
