Boys Baseball
The St. Clement Anchormen improved their overall Catholic Central League record to 2-3 with a 5-4 win over Christo Rey of Boston on Sunday, May 6. Freshman Marty Rose (Charlestown) was impressive on the mound pitching the entire game and giving up 4 runs. With two outs and the tying run on third base in the sixth, Rose left the runner stranded by striking out the batter and ending the inning. Rose walked only two batters and struck out seven. Offensively, Rose chipped in by blasting a triple and knocking in a run. Senior team mate Alex Fagundes (Cambridge) scored a run and earned an RBI with a single. Senior Joe Codair (Stoneham) played solidly behind the plate and air hit a single in giving the Anchormen lead which they never relinquished. The Anchormen face off this week against their league rivals Pope John.
Girls Softball
The Lady Anchors captured their fourth win of the year upping their overall record to 4-6 with an explosive 18-5 win over Notre Dame of Lawrence on Saturday, May 5. Junior Allison Caloggero (Medford) went 3 for 3 by slugging a single, double and triple and leading the team with four RBIs. Freshman Jessica Popken (Medford) assisted by going 2 for 3 with 2 walks and 2 RBIs. Fellow classmate Christina Puccio (Medford) went 3 for 3 with three singles and played solid defense at second base. Senior Diana Tran (Somerville) chipped in with three singles and three RBIs. Junior Jessie Jepson (Somerville) played an impressive hot corner by throwing out five batters, once with runners in scoring position.
Senior Nicole Cella (Charlestown) pitched five innings and gave up five runs. Cella fanned three and and walked four. First year pitcher Kaitlyn Anderson (Somerville) relieved Cella and pitched two scoreless innings with no walks.
The Lady Anchors will also face Catholic Central League rivals the Pope John and Lowell Catholic this week.
