The Irish American Police Officers Association of Massachusetts will be holding its 9th Annual Awards Dinner this Friday night over at the American Legion Post 440 (Nonantum Post), 295 California Street, Newton (near the Waltham/Watertown lines). This year they are honoring five of our own Police Officers – for Life Saving Рawards go to Officer Derrick Dottin, Officer Alex Capobianco and Officer Steve St. Hillaire Рalso being honored from Somerville are Detective Mario Oliveira and Officer Neil Collins for their investigative works. We should all be proud of these and other fine Somerville Police Officers that work hard and are dedicated to their jobs. We from The Somerville News salute them all for a fine job well done Рwhen you see these fine gentlemen on the street congratulate them for their efforts. If you want tickets to the event, call Capt. Upton at 617 625-1600.

We hear that the “Oldest Profession” has taken on a new marketing strategy…its been said that at the Mystic Projects, the so called “Ladies of the Night” are passing out business cards now complete with their photos and price list printed right on them Рguess this makes it a lot easier for the police down there to know exactly whom to stop and arrest Рwe think the world is changing very fast.

Registrar of Probate John Buonomo is having his annual once a year fundraiser, but this year he’s having it at a new location Рon Wednesday, April 30 at the Montvale Plaza in Stoneham. He usually has quite a large crowd and this year he is expecting even more people Рwe hear he’s up for re-election this year. He does a great job down there at the courts and some of us here have known John since he graduated from High School.

That Spelling Bee that we mentioned last week here in Newstalk is quickly becoming a success – we‚Äôve been told that the teams are filling up fast – but if you want to get a team together, you still can at a cost of $300.00 – which goes to the Capuano PTA.     Contact Sean at seanjfitz@comcast.net or Cristin at cdlind@yahoo.com for information. Remember the date ‚Äì Friday, April 25th at the Holiday Inn on Washington Street ‚Äì come on out, even if you don‚Äôt have a team and enjoy the evening that‚Äôs not political (if we see politics going on at this event, we will report it). It is for a good cause and should be fun.

Get well to our own Bobbie Toner here at The News, who recently underwent an operation last Thursday – she is doing well resting at home and we miss her‚Ķhurry back! Also, her cousin and popular well-known local, Ricky Willette – is also home recuperating from a minor surgical procedure that he had this past weekend. Both are great people and dedicated individuals as well as very popular here in Somerville.

We are very pleased to have him join us at our ever-popular annual event, organized by the hard working Doug Holder and Tim Gager (we are also very blessed to work with them both).
