The future of Somerville’s music scene came together on Friday for the Somerville Band Camp’s final concert at the Kennedy School. Students, ranging from a 5-year-old violinist to a 77-year-old cellist, showcased their talents to teachers, friends and family in a packed cafeteria. The concert followed two weeks of intensive training for almost every instrument imaginable, including a sousaphone.

NotetheabsenceofsheetmRichard Saunders, music supervisor for Somerville Public Schools, said the camp wouldn’t be possible without a grant from the Somerville Arts Council and the school system’s endorsement. ‚Äú[Somerville Public Schools] really put their money where their mouth is when it comes to arts education,‚Äù he said.

The band camp is split into several fields and each had the opportunity to show what they had learned on Friday. The string camp, which is celebrating its 15th year, displayed several orchestras, varying on skill level. The wind camp performed several Beatles songs, including ‚ÄúEleanor Rigby‚Äù and ‚ÄúA Hard Day’s Night.‚Äù Finally, Ms. Maxfield’s improvisation class had the audience clapping along to their rendition of the ‚ÄúSomerville Blues‚Äù to conclude the show.Thestringcampsbeginning

This summer’s camp ran with 12 teachers guiding 170 students. The camp runs for two weeks every summer and costs $80 for Somerville residents and $100 for non-residents. All ages are welcome.
