Nicole Genard (center) added to her list of SHS career accomplishments last week.

Somerville High School girls track phenomenon Nicole Genard flew down to Greensboro, North Carolina, recently with assistant coach Lisa Curtin to compete in the New Balance Scholastic Nationals.
On Thursday Nicole competed in the Emerging Elites and earned a section of the Javelin.  She finished first, breaking the record with her throw of 133′ 5″. The previous record was 122’7″. Nicole earned a National Championship Medal.
The Emerging Elite  Section is for athletes just coming onto the national track scene.
Nicole faced competitors from all over the United States and was able to break a meet record and earn the first National Championship for a Somerville High School Athlete.
Nicole competed in the Emerging Elites 100m hurdles on Friday. In the trials she set a new personal best with a time of 14.60 and qualified for the finals. That time was the third fastest going into the finals.  In the finals, Nicole hit the 9th and 10th hurdle which cost her time and finished a very respectable 7th with a time of  15.06.
Unfortunately, one of the other hurdlers next to her inadvertently swayed into Nicole’s hurdling space, which caused the hitting of the hurdles.  Despite hitting the last two hurdles, finishing 7th in the USA is an outstanding performance.
Coach Charles O’Roarke couldn’t be prouder. “Nicole’s performances on the National level are a credit to her talent and determination.  A National Champion from Somerville High!”
