Newstalk – May 4

On May 4, 2011, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

It looks like the Edgerly School that’s located on Bonair Street in East Somerville is the place to be on Wednesday nights at 6p.m. for its ever popular “Zumba Classes”! We hear that Somerville’s own Michelle Bowler, Donna Amenta, and, believe it or not, Jim Halloran are among the top ten “Zumbas Champs” here in the Ville, with their fancy footwork and funky moves.  Head down and check it out for yourself!

Alderman Ward 5 Sean O’Donovan is having a fundraiser / get together , Wednesday, May 11, (correction:print edition had the wrong date printed, correct date is the 11th) at the Olde Magoun  Saloon from 6 to 9p.m. This has been a yearly event and Sean has managed to pack them in every year. We plan on being there and hopefully you will as well to support a good alderman for his Ward 5 contingents and the city. A politician who says he’s a friend and knows the meaning of friendship and loyalty.

Former Villen resident and political activist Diane Mahoney, originally from Ball Square, was recently spotted back in the Ville. Diane moved to Orlando FLA working for Jet Blue, was up here for a sort visit and looks great. She was very active in Ward 5 and the city politics for many years. She looks great and it appears that her sense of humor hasn’t been lost. We wish her well. She tells us she keeps in touch by The Somerville News website.

Speaking of Lions, but this time in Medford, congratulations to Steve Dalyrmple  of famed local Steve’s and Son’s who was installed as King Lion over at Medford Lions club this past Monday night. Steve is seen all over the place, a busy guy and he still finds time to donate his time for local organizations like this.

Hats off to our friend Patricia McGovern, President of the Medford Kiwanis. This past week Patricia hosted “Kiwanis annual Charity Fight Night” at Anthony’s in Malden. The house was packed to the rim with close to 500 local boxing fans in attendance, not to mention ring side seats for some of our News staff. This was a great event and for a great cause.

The debate of which city is more interesting, Somerville or Cambridge, is taking a small twist. A new internal city-wide debate all through has just arisen and the race is on to find out which city department has the best “candy treats” on the counter. A lot of the departments have candy bowls for the public. So far we can tell you that the Election Department is winning hands down over all the rest that we have sampled so far. They are offering real milk chocolate candies in a bowl on the counter. If there is a better one out there let us know and we will be only too glad to go to sample and check it out then report on our sweet findings.

Good luck and get well local Attorney and great guy Ray Snow Sr. of the city on his upcoming back surgery this Friday. Ray is a great guy and we wish him all the best for a speedy recovery from all his friends here at the News.

Last Friday, lifelong resident and just nice guy Bill Chambers of Spring Hill was in a serious Motorcycle Accident on Mystic and Shore Drive. He was rushed to Mass General where he underwent surgery for broken leg in several places.    Those that know Bill will tell you there isn’t a nicer guy in the city. He’s so well liked and many of his friends are giving him many prayers for a speedy recovery.

So what’s going on with some of the places here in the city? We would have thought that when you hire people to handle food for the public you might want to teach them, or require them, to at least wear hair nets. We heard someone remark that a Local BK franchise  here in the Ville recently was serving up breakfast sandwiches with the addition of hair strands.

Another piece of history here in the city recently passed away. Local historian and city artist Fred Lund, who also worked 57 years as a City of Somerville employee, recently passed away. Fred was responsible for designing the local city crest, amongst other things. He was very involved in all city historical events for many years, and he will certainly be missed. Maybe the city might do something to keep his memory alive for what he has done over the years.

Congratulations to Jimmy Del Ponte Jr. was recently named to the honor roll at West Somerville Neighborhood School.  Jimmy is the drummer for the rock band STAINLESS, along with his brother Joey and Lance Mahon.

Condolences go out to the family of Helena Boliver who sadly passed away this past weekend. Helena was a wonderful woman born and raised in East Cambridge, then moved to Somerville’s cobble hill apartments. Helena was also one of The Somerville News’ biggest fans.  She always waited for the paper to come out every Wednesday to make sure that we got it right with no mistakes and she enjoyed very much reading Newstalk every week. She will be sadly missed by all here and all her own fans throughout the two cities.

This is a yearly event that attracts new and old friends. Everyone enjoys themselves and it’s for a great cause, not to mention it’s Gene’s personal charity and he deserves a lot of support from us here in the Ville.
