Newstalk – April 27

On April 27, 2011, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

Last week we mentioned and thanked the Somerville DPW for a job well done for repairing the lights at the “Hank” Hanson Memorial Park on Medford Street.   Then we got another phone call from a concerned citizen who asked us, who do you call and talk to at the federal level to have that huge eye sore of a “Federal Construction Project” sign removed that’s attached to the park fence that looks very tacky and is covering up the park?   Talk about disrespect!  After a brief phone call to city hall – before you knew it the sign was down!  Another job well done and now no more eye sore.

We hear that movie star Mark Walberg is going to be filming the movie “Ted” about a talking teddy bear in and around the Ville on May 18th! Originally the filming locations were to be shot in Boston but then later they decided that Somerville was a better choice. We heard that the Burren and the Somerville Theater were two of the chosen locations to start filming at.   It is still going before the Board of Alderman for approval and permits which shouldn’t pose a potential concern for problems. Just a few traffic jams but should be fun to watch.

Happy Birthday to Chip Koty – he’s getting older and we are getting even older. Chip is from the well-known famous Koty family.  Also Happy Birthday to Mary Jane Gambale who is celebrating her birthday here in the Ville this week. And celebrating a birthday in the Ville this week is another good friend, Kenny Webb.   We wish them all the best!

Condolences to the family of Ricky Nuzzo. Ricky was a very nice guy and also younger brother to Somerville’s Superintendent of Inspectional Service Edward Nuzzo. Also, condolences to the family of Ryan Trant who sadly passed away this past weekend. Both men died too young and will be sadly missed.

The barriers have finally been removed at the site of that eyesore foundation on Cross Street! At least parking spots are freed up for residents as well as local merchants to park now. Wonder what happened there?

Joan Puglia made her announcement this week to run for Ward Seven Alderman.  She came to the office and gave her press release. Normally we don’t do political press releases but we’ve decided to change that and next week it will be in the paper. Joan is a nice lady, is a Somerville native, and has always been involved throughout the years in various organizations. We wish her well. Running against an incumbent is hard enough.

We see that Auto Giant Mercedes dealer here in Somerville, owned by Herb Chambers, was ordered to cease operations and shut down the their newly opened repair facility on Linwood Street for a third time by Somerville Inspectional Services for not having the proper permits to operate a business for that site. You’d think that good old Herb and his crew would have thought about that before opening.

Our good friend Tony Alibrandi (Tony’s barber shop in Teele Square) and his wife Donna are trying to sell their home way up in PEI in Canada. It’s a nice 2 bedrm, located in a quant village – asking $99,500.00 – a great place for a summer home and beautiful country up in PEI. If you’re interested stop in at the shop on Holland Street and talk to Tony, and mention you saw it here.

So we hear that State Representative Denise Provost is proposing legislation or sponsoring legislation that would require double the amount of signatures on any citizen signature initiative?    That would make it harder for Democracy wouldn’t it? Just saying.
