Spring is finally here after all that snow and a sure sign of it is the annual Gene Brune Breakfast is being talked about. Former mayor and president Registrar of Deeds Eugene Brune.  The event will be held on May 22 at Anthony’s in Malden, with special guest of honor State Treasurer Steve Grossman. It will be interesting to see who shows since its expected that Gene may not run for re-election when his seat is up.

Happy Birthday to a few of Somerville’s finest, two of Somerville’s finest employees, Phil Jeffres celebrated this past week, along with Ed Bean the city auditor, we wish them both a happy birthday.   Also celebrating is that sharp accountant and well known Davis Square character Diane O’Brien, this is Diane’s busy season but if you want your taxes done she’s the lady to do it, her office is over by Mike’s in Davis Square. Also we  can’t forget young Jimmy Halloran who is a nice guy he’s just like his father, a nice guy always had good things to say, both of which we wish the best and Happy Birthday. Before we forget that popular Spring Hill family man Matthew Capobianco is also celebrating this week, by the way, it wasn’t long ago but only a few months ago he got married so this is a special year for him, we wish him the best.

Congratulations to Somerville’s own duo music group “In Mood” who appeared on the new Fox hit show “30 Seconds of Fame.” The show is hosted by Craig J. Jackson and aired this past Saturday night where 24 acts of diverse talents are pitted against one another in two round of competition and have 30 seconds to compete against each other to prove they have what it takes to win $25,000. “In The Mood” didn’t win the money, but fared very well, at least they got 30 seconds of fame sort off.

Condolences to the Holden Family for the loss of their mom Jean, she was born in Somerville and graduated from Somerville High in 1950.  Jean is survived by her devoted husband and best friend of 51 years Arthur E. Holden Jr. Jean was a very nice lady and will be missed.

Tony Lafuente had a huge get together of various family, friends and supporters in Ward 4 Tuesday night and looks like he’s in it to win it, by the looks of the crowd last night he should not be taken for granted and since he’s from the private sector, he understands the plight of the businesses here in the city and what’s needed to get on the right track. His opponent is another PDS’er put in by Ms. Gewirtz and Ms. Rafal who works at a non-profit, we understand she just moved here to Somerville a couple of years ago.

Serg and Helen Sessa celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on March 9. Their three daughters, Nicole, Emily and Rachel hosted a surprise party for them at the Somerville Lions Club on March 26. It was a great turnout with family and friends with a lot of food and dancing. We here at  Newstalk wish them both a happy 25th and 25 more years while they’re at it.

Regular street sweeping schedules will resume beginning Friday, April 1st and continue through December 31st 2011.  On designated street sweeping days, vehicles must be moved to one side of the street, as dictated by posted signs on each street.  Failure to comply with street sweeping parking regulations will result in a $50 fine.  Additionally, despite changes to some signage throughout the City, street sweeping hours will remain 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  Signage will be reflective of these times prior to the start of the 2011 street sweeping program.

Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES) held its annual Mayors For Meals Day on March 23rd as a part of its March For Meals campaign. Cambridge Mayor David Maher and Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone participated in the event to show their support for the community’s seniors. March For Meals is a national campaign initiated by Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) that seeks to raise awareness of senior hunger and encourage action on the part of the local community. Senior nutrition programs across the United States, like Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services, promote March For Meals in their local communities through public events, partnerships with local businesses, volunteer recruitment and fund raising initiatives.

Board of Aldermen Declares Week of April 4-11 “National Public Health Week in Somerville; Somerville Health Department to Celebrate with Events, Seminars Signing on to celebrate National Public Health Week (NPHW), Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and the Somerville Board of Aldermen declared the week of April 4 – 11, 2011 as “National Public Health Week in Somerville” during the regular meeting of the BOA on Thursday evening.  The City of Somerville and Somerville Health Department will celebrate the week’s theme, “Safety is No Accident:  Live Injury Free,” with a series of events, discussions and seminars throughout the week.  Since 1995, NPHW has been sponsored by the American Public Health Association, and is designed to highlight issues that are important to improving the public’s health. On Thursday, March 31st at 7:00 p.m., join Barry Pell at the Central Library (79 Highland Avenue) for a cultural and photographic tour of Central Asia.  Balancing his training in photography/ photojournalism, his love of travel, and concern for the environment, Mr. Pell uses photography and interactive dialogue to educate people about the rich cultures and challenging lifestyles of developing nations.  The presentation will be followed by a question and answer period. Barry Pell is a world traveler and photojournalist.  He has traveled widely over the past 40 years, visiting and documenting landscapes and cultures in 155 countries.  Mr. Pell also lived and traveled in China for two years and in eastern Europe for one year.  He currently lectures on international cultures at schools, universities and institutions in the Boston area. This free program is funded by the friends of the Somerville Public Library and all are welcome to attend.

There will be open auditions for David Ives Comedy  “All In Timing,” Sunday April 3rd at 1 pm  and Monday April 4th at 7 pm at the Medford  Fire  Station, 13 Medford Street (at the corner  of Medford St. and Main St.)  The performance will be held Friday May 13th at The Somerville High School Auditorium at 7:30 and will be directed by Don Pinnelle and produced by Jimmy Del Ponte.
