Davis Memories

Life in the Ville by Jimmy Del Ponte

Since the ruining of Davis Square is looming, I thought I’d do what I do best, reminisce. My pal Ron Bargoot had this photo on a Facebook group: “Somerville the good old days. “

My best memory of Davis Square was being in the movie theatre while a train rumbled by.

Here are our friends’ comments:

“I grew up in Somerville loved it but I moved up north to Somerville north. Now called Tewksbury. I see people I grew up with all the time in the post office. But I drove in Davis Sq. for the first time in years. I almost got lost. And I drove Green Cab for over twenty years.”

“A 25 story building doesn’t belong in Davis Sq.! Crazy!”

“Park Snow, Grants, Woolworths, Thomm McCann shoes, and Gorins department stores. All great stores that we shopped at in the 70’s.”

“I’m so disgusted by what’s happening. What is Davis Square without McKinnon’s and The Burren? And 25 stories is way out of proportion. It almost seems unsafe to have something that tall in the middle of a residential area.”

“Going to school at the Western back in late 1970. Going to the movies and the Rosebud in the 1980s. I loved living in SOMERVILLE!”

Who would have thought there would such a drastic change to our beloved Davis Square?

I guess we should just enjoy it while we can. In the meantime, check out this photo of old Davis Square.
