Songwriters in the Round at the ROOTED Armory Café

On October 1, 2024, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

Songwriters in the Round is held at the Armory Café, a warm, welcoming place where people can enjoy food and drink as well as chance meetings and conversation. But everyone becomes quiet when four songwriters take the stage to take turns playing songs.

Supported in part by the Somerville Arts Council, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The event is free but you may want to donate $10-$20 for the performers.

Songwriters this week:

Alice BrightSky was born and raised in NJ but now hails from leafy Westchester, NY where she works, raises her young family and huddles in quiet corners with her guitar breathing new life into old songs and… old life into new ones.  Her first album, Box of Me, was released in 2013 shortly after the birth of her first son.  Alice performed extensively around the NY, NJ and CT area following the release and enjoyed a warm reception by local radio and the indie blogosphere.  In 2015 after launching the recording of her sophomore record, all music endeavors came to a screeching halt as the BrightSky family expanded again and being a mother to two little boys left little time for anything else.  Jump to 2019, blessed with a steady babysitter. Alice reignited her music endeavors,  performing around the Hudson Valley and using the Covid “down time” to finish her second album, American Town.  Alice, as of late, has been focused on writing for her 3rd album and expanding her performance range along the Eastern Seaboard and out west, with a notable recent performance in Austin for the Gorilla Music Showcase during SXSW. http://alicebrightskymusic.com

Joyful, sincere and magnetic are just a few of the words to describe Jim Trick. He delivers a blend of alternative folk, thoughtful pop, and spoken word.   Influenced by Neil Finn, Bruce Cockburn, John Gorka and Charles Bukowski; Trick takes the acoustic guitar down a path of percussive, intricate, and ethereal ranges creating well thought out melodic support for carefully crafted lyrics. Boston has welcomed Jim with open arms, as a frequent guest lecturer at The Berklee College of Music and as a solo artist. Jim was featured along side American Idol’s Alex Preston, by Berklee College of Music for a performance entitled “An Evening With New England’s top songwriters”.  Jim performs regularly at iconic venues such as Club Passim, Godfrey Daniels, Cafe Lena, The Me&Thee Coffeehouse, Berklee’s Cafe 939 and the New Moon Coffeehouse, just to name a few. He has shared the stage with Ellis Paul, Brooks Williams, Susan Werner, Martyn Joseph, Christopher Williams, Antje Duvekot, Vance Gilbert and John Gorka. Jimtrickmusic.com

Derek Rando is a Massachusetts-based songwriter and front man of the band, Tenderhoof. The music is introspective and has the dark shaking hands with the optimistic…partly sunny with a promise of rain. He is excited to reconnect with his friends at the Somerville Armorybluetomorrowmusic.com https://instagram.com/derekrando
