Theatre@First brings live theatre to Powderhouse Park this June 8-30 with a production of Marian, Or The True Tale of Robin Hood by Adam Szymkowicz. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Somerville Arts Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
Marian, Or The True Tale of Robin Hood, directed by Paulina Martz, is a joyful, diverse, heartfelt and hilarious play. It explores themes of gender-expression, and the experiences of those of marginalized genders, and how to find out who you are and who you love; all wonderfully juxtaposed within the familiar story of Robin Hood. This slapstick Monty-Python-esque farce is rife with sword fights, thumb-wrestling matches, characters in disguise, and endless surprises.
Theatre@First is home to the finest non-professional actors in the Boston theatre scene. The Marian cast includes a whopping 30 talented actors, including Kris Kim (Marian/Robin), Christine Strong (Alanna Dale), Patrick Neal (Little John), Addie Pates (Will Scarlett), Zack Murphy (Prince John), Sam Ingram (Sheriff of Nottingham), Jessica Harvey (Lady Shirley), Ted Overholt (Friar Tuck), Shannon Fay (Much the Miller’s Son), Rosie Sentman (Tommy of No Consequence), Hannah Young (Sir Theo the Punctual), Karishma Chouhan (Lucy), and Dominic Valentino (Tanner). Amelia Smith, Samuel Zeiberg, Juan Jose Boschetti, Noelle Colant, Rachel Kang, and Tovah Lockwood comprise the amazing guards. Creating a performance of this magnitude would not be possible without the wonderful understudies: Dylan Merzenich, Emma Petracca, Joey Phoenix, Magdalena Poost, Devin Bachman, Atharva Nimbalwar, Elyse Barber, Emily Duggan, Lucas Common-Miller, Jasmine
Caamano, and Theresa Griffin.
Marian continues another exciting year of quality performances at Theatre@First. Upcoming in the 2024 schedule is Festival@First: Love is Love, a festival of one act plays written by local playwrights. Since its founding in 2003, Theatre@First has produced more than fifty mainstage shows, as well as cabarets, Shakespeare slams, charity play festivals, and a popular series of staged readings. A vital part of the thriving Somerville arts scene, T@F draws on the talent and support of individuals and organizations throughout our community to provide affordable, quality theatre in a variety of local venues.
