Pack 3 and Troop 3 Somerville, serving youth as part of Scouting America (formerly the Boy Scouts of America), are proud to announce that Kristen Butler, Scoutmaster of Troop 3 and Committee Chair of Pack 3, has been named the recipient of the District Award of Merit for 2024. This award is given by the Sons of Liberty District of Scouting America, and recognizes exceptional service to Scouts and Scouting.

Kristen was recognized for her 15 years of extraordinary service to Scouting in Somerville and at the District level. In 2009, she worked with other Somerville families to restart Somerville Cub Scout Pack 3, which had lapsed for several years. Today, Somerville Pack 3 is thriving, with more registered Cub Scouts and parent leaders than ever before.

Kristen is also the Scoutmaster of Troop 3 Somerville, one of the oldest in the country, continuously chartered with Scouting America since 1910. Since becoming Scoutmaster in 2018, she has grown the Troop in size, and today the Troop is the largest and most active it has been, despite the challenges of the pandemic.

Kristen also serves at the District level, most notably on the Eagle Scout Board of Review, the committee that awards the Eagle Scout rank to youth, the highest award a Scout can achieve.

Kristen has dedicated her Scouting career to ensuring that every young person who wants to be a Scout can be, whether or not they are from an experienced scouting family, and regardless of ability to pay. From a warmer sleeping bag to a fishing pole to a bicycle, when a Scout needs to borrow a piece of equipment, there is a good chance Kristen has one in her legendary basement. We are grateful for Kristen’s service to the youth of Somerville.
