Massachusetts is a tough state to make ends meet. That’s why I started driving for Uber and Lyft. Now my financial livelihood could be destroyed by labor-backed bills seeking to rewrite the rules for rideshare and delivery drivers like me. I balance caring for my ailing mother while working as an independent contractor between her medical appointments. Some people want jobs with rigid 40-hour schedules but being an “employee” does not work for everyone.

I enjoy my work. The best part is the flexibility to load an app, and drive when I am available. There are many full-time driver openings with the MBTA and UPS. They offer sign-on bonuses, a structured employment model, and benefits. Finding drivers, however, is a challenge for them. Maybe it’s the work, or perhaps the schedule.

There are bills at the State House to protect flexibility and it’s time for lawmakers, unions, and companies to reach an agreement that puts drivers first. Livelihoods depend on it.
