The Somerville Homeless Coalition (SHC) reminds us that as the days grow colder we become more aware of the harsh and difficult living conditions that their clients experiencing homelessness face every day and night.
In recognition of National Hunger and Homelessness month, they encourage you to help them raise support and awareness for those in our community without a home.
You can be involved too by participating in a fundraising activity throughout November. SHC staff will be holding a sponsored Sleep Out on Friday November 18, where they will stand in solidarity with their clients by spending the night outside.
Join the Somerville Homeless Coalition by braving the elements and sleep outdoors for one night in November to raise awareness for homelessness. Take on the challenge and sleep on your porch, couch, in a car, or outdoors; basically, anywhere except your bed. Feel like part of the team and do it on November 18. This is when SHC staff will be sleeping outside.
SHC was created by the local community’s grassroots response to the social crisis of homelessness in 1985. Neighbors, community activists, university students, faith-based leaders, business supporters and city officials united to address the escalating problem of homelessness within Somerville. These collaborative efforts resulted in the opening of the city’s first emergency shelter and the establishment of SHC.
