Even with another strong effort, the Somerville High School co-ed swim team suffered another tough defeat, this time in a tough 87-81 defeat at the hands of Malden Catholic in Wednesday’s non-league meet at the Kennedy Pool. With the loss, the Highlanders fell to 1-3 overall.

Caio Azevedo, who captured a school record in the individual medley, still couldn’t do enough to bring the Highlanders to a victory. Azevedo finished with an impressive first place time of 2:14:18 in the 200 Individual Medley.

“We put up a good fight, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for the victory,” said coach Mike Williams. “The kids swam a great race, but we just came up a bit short.”

Other top performances the 200-yard medley relay team of Azevedo, Cam Kostopoulos, along with Roberto Duardo and Brandan Spingle, who recorded a first place finish with a time of 2:00.58 followed by Rachel Berry, who defeated all of her male competitors in the 100-yard backstroke. The 400-yard freestyle relay team also captured a first place finish en route to a winning time of 4:09.90 while Azevedo earned a first place result in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.25.

“We’re a young team, but we’re battling hard with every meet,” said Williams. “Overall, the kids swam an outstanding meet, and they gave it a great effort. It was a great effort, and a close meet. We got some great performances.”
