Haitian Coalition to hold 6 p.m. meeting at Healey School

Around 75 Somerville High School students gathered in front of the school last night to light candles for those affected by the earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday.

"I was watching the news and I saw these two guys with two candles," organizer Daphne Juleus said. "I thought, 'Let's make it bigger.' It came together last minute."

Juleus, a senior in the high school's nursing assistant program, has also been helping raise money for the Red Cross, bringing in $500 in two days.

The Haitian Coalition of Somerville will host a meeting to coordinate relief efforts at the Arthur D. Healey School tonight at 6 p.m.

Coalition Director Franklin Dalembert said the meeting will also provide information about how to contact family members, which has been impossible for many.

"People are asking, 'Where can I reach my parents right now? Is there a number I can call?' This is what I'm hearing over and over and over," Dalembert said.

Juleus, who relied on Facebook and other social networking to get the word out about the Thursday night vigil, said she hasn't heard from the extended family she has in Haiti.

"We're trying to reach them," Juleus said. "We can't find them right now."
