Changes to Powder House Circle

A series of traffic changes will be installed in Powder House Circle later this month to make this high-crash intersection safer and more predictable for all users.

Description of Work

The antiquated rotary will be converted into a modern roundabout using low-cost “quick-build” materials like paint, signage, and flex posts. These changes will help inform the eventual large-scale reconstruction of the circle.

Here are some key elements of the new design:

One clearly marked circulating lane will clarify vehicle movements and reduce speeds.
Crosswalks to the center island will be removed, allowing for safer and more efficient pedestrian passage around the perimeter.
Protected bike lanes will lead into and around the circle.
Traffic signals will be turned off and bagged.
Bus stops will be lengthened to MBTA standards and relocated to the outer edges of the roundabout. The inbound stop on Broadway @ College Ave. will be consolidated to provide better overall spacing between stops on Route 89.
Parking spaces on Broadway and College Ave. closest to the intersection will be repurposed to accommodate relocated bus stops.

Work Schedule

Installation is expected to take place in stages from approximately mid-August through early September, based on weather and crew availability.
Most work is expected to take place overnight.

Anticipated Impacts During Installation

Traffic flow is expected to be largely maintained during work hours.
One or two nights of elevated noise levels are expected when old pavement markings are removed, but most operations should not result in disruption beyond typical nightly traffic conditions.
