With a new coach, new systems and new players, the Somerville High School girls basketball team is in the midst of a transition.

Despite a strong effort by Kelsey Garrity, the Highlanders suffered a 59-33 defeat to Gloucester in Friday night’s non-league season opening match-up at the Brune Field House.

“We have a lot young players and they’re getting used to playing at the varsity level,” said new coach Shannon Clark who replaces 18-year coach Brian Harris this year. “It’s still early in the season and we have a lot of work to do. We have to get back to the basis and play some strong, fundamental defense. We have a lot of time to work on things, and we’ll get things going really soon.”

Led by some dominant post play, Gloucester grabbed an early lead from the start and managed to cruise to a 32-19 halftime lead.

“We missed a lot of free throws at the line, and we missed a lot of lay-ups,” said Clark. “If we had made some of those lay-ups, perhaps it could’ve changed the complexion of the game. We got off to a slow start, and they (Gloucester) were able to take advantage of their post play and passing.”

Capitalizing on several opportunities, Gloucester jumped out to a 32-19 halftime lead and continued to cruise in the second half.

“It was the opening night jitters,” said Clark. “It was a bit of inexperience, and we still have 19 games remaining. We have a lot of basketball remaining, and we’ll continue to improve. These girls are learning to play varsity basketball, and they’re going to get it.”

Leading the way was Garrity, who recorded a team high 13 points while Indira Evora added 10. Also contributing was Ashley Auciello, who chipped in with six points.

“The outrebounded us in the post, and we looked a bit disorganized at times,” said Clark. “Give credit to Gloucester, they’re an outstanding team and they did a great job.”

Predicted to capture the Greater Boston League once again this season, Clark is well aware that there’s still plenty of work ahead for the Highlanders to fulfill their pre-season aspirations.

“The girls are going to get it, and I have complete confidence in them,” said Clark. “We’re going to turn things around.”

The Highlanders will return to action on Thursday night when they’ll host Lynn English in another non-league match-up.
