Very sad to see that Ames Envelope Company is now closing its doors here in Somerville and moving West – out of Massachusetts. Ames was at one time the largest single employer here in Somerville and had been in business now for over 90 years. It's sad to see them go, it's the sign of the times, the last of the big time local employers. Some of the employees were offered the opportunity to be relocated, were not sure how many took the company up on the offer. We hope that the existing employees that are let go will find another employment soon.

Tom Champion who was the Communications Director with the City has left his position and we here at The News wish him best of luck, we probably won't be the only ones that will miss that cheery voice notifying us of impending storms and emergencies. Best of luck Tom, we know you're not moving, so hopefully see you around the city soon.

The annual Somerville High School musical is coming up in February, this year its "Beauty and the Beast" – three performances will be held – on Feb 4th, Feb 5th and Feb 6th tickets are $7.00 for adults and $6.00 for elderly and children under age 12, which can be purchased at the door or by calling Producer Rosemary Sears at 617 625-6600 x 6109.

"Dracula" is coming to the 'Ville with Somerville's own Tom Champion as Dr. Seward (is this his new job?). Performances are set for Feb. 12th to the 27th at the Elizabeth Peabody House, all performances start at 8pm with a special Valentines Day (Feb. 14th) performance at 3pm. Can our mortal heroes stop Dracula before he takes not only their lives, but also their very souls in the 'Ville?

Condolences go out to the family of (as well as to Lion's Clubs across the state) Doctor Eugene Cheng – who passed away Friday night. Dr. Cheng was instrumental in Lion's eye research charity programs and he was heavily involved with the Chinatown and Somerville Lion's Clubs and their causes. He will be missed by many.

The Somerville Democratic City Committee Meeting, which will be followed by Ward Caucus elections for Delegates to the June State Democratic Convention, will be held this coming Monday, February 8th starting at 6:30pm at the Capuano Early Education Center on Glen Street. Congressman Mike Capuano will be the guest speaker.

Star sighting at Jimbo's Roast Beef on Bow Street last week – between games were some Boston Bruins players – tasting the scallop plates and roast beef sandwiches. Nice guys and they tell us they are here in Somerville often – they like Jimbo's.

Local business owner Barbara McKenna of McKenna Insurance is home now recuperating after a motor vehicle struck her in Medford on a crosswalk. Barbara is a very nice person and we wish her well and a speedy recovery!

The Chamber of Commerce monthly get together is this Thursday night (the 4th) from 6pm to 8pm at the Precinct Bar in Union Square, great time to mingle and meet your fellow business owners and managers here in Somerville.

Don't forget those classes are being held up at the High School in the evening – many classes are offered to the public and at a very reasonable rate. If you hurry you might be able to get into one of the classes.

Wednesday Feb 3, Precinct Bar (70 Union Sq. Somerville, MA) is throwing a benefit concert for victims of the Haitian Earthquake. For only $15 you can see 11 Live bands playing from 6pm-1am. Precinct will be passing around free appetizers for a few hours and there will also be a silent auction. ALL proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross.
