On Thursday, February 4, 2021, at approximately 11:07 p.m., the Somerville Police Department responded to a report of an alleged assault in the area of the 400 block of Medford Street. A white male is alleged to have erratically approached a male and female and to have struck the male on the head several times with a firearm.

Police learned the male suspect barricaded himself on the third floor of a private dwelling located at 400 Medford Street where he is believed to reside. The male, who appeared to be agitated and highly emotional, refused to exit the building for officers at the scene. A request for assistance was made for additional emergency resources, including EMS and specialized NEMLEC units. As part of the NEMLEC response, trained negotiators were utilized to establish communication with the suspect.

Negotiators spoke with the male for approximately 90 minutes and were able to convince him to come out peacefully.  The male was transported by ambulance to Cambridge Hospital for a medical and mental health evaluation and is being charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, in violation of Massachusetts General Law Chapter 265, Section 15A.

The male victim suffered minor injuries from the initial alleged assault. Chief Charles Femino would like to commend his officers who assisted in deescalating a volatile situation throughout this incident, as well as the responding NEMLEC units for negotiating a peaceful resolution without further injury.
