Update: Driver of hit and run in Somerville surrenders

On April 16, 2021, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times
Update from Mass State Police:
The driver of the vehicle that struck the victim in this crash turned himself in at the Somerville Police Station around noon yesterday. He also surrendered the vehicle, a white 2015 Ford Transit Connect. The driver is a 64-year-old Somerville man. He has been summonsed to appear in Somerville District Court on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash that caused personal injury. Our investigation is ongoing; whether additional charges will be sought depends on the result of that investigation.

Per MSP Media Relations policy, names of suspects summonsed to face charges (as opposed to being arrested) are not released until the defendant appears in court. (For personal injury crashes that are not fatalities, police who do not have an arrest warrant can only physically arrest a suspect if the suspect is located in the vehicle a short time after the crash. Whereas this suspect was identified more than three days after the crash, the charging mechanism available to us was to summons him to court.)

Troopers assigned to the Medford Barracks responded to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle on McGrath Highway in Somerville. The vehicle did not stop after striking the pedestrian and fled the scene on McGrath highway towards Cambridge. The crash resulted in life-threatening injuries to the pedestrian. The first photo is from where the strike occurred, all following photos are from the next intersection.

Troopers are seeking a white Ford Transit Connect 2014-2021 model year. Very specific to this van, and things that will cause this to stand out among other Ford Transit Connects, are the amount of side windows and the large sunroof. These vans are usually outfitted as utility vehicles without side windows or a sunroof. The vehicle will most likely have damage to the driver side headlight area (bumper, hood, and/or fender). Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact Troopers at the Medford Barracks at 781-396-0100.
